When To Use It
A bar spoon is a specialized spoon designed to simplify the mixing process when assembling a cocktail. They are not only used to stir cocktails that shouldn’t be shaken, but they also mix the ingredients to an optimum temperature and dilution, because they don’t break down the ice too vigorously. The end of a bar spoon can be a great tool for lightly muddling herbs or reducing champagne bubbles, while the spoon itself can be used as a 5ml measure. Bar spoons can also be used for layering drinks! Simply rest a flat-ended bar spoon on the surface of the first ingredient. Pour the second ingredient down the stem of the bar spoon, lifting the spoon up as the level rises in the glass so the flat end is always just on the surface of the liquid. When layering ingredients remember that the higher the sugar content the lower in the glass it will rest.
